BOSTON, Mass.—Katie Hair, a gymnast, and Kelsey Earle, who studied ballet for 16 years, were enthralled by Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company at Citi Performing Arts Want Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Ms. Earle remarked, “I think the Chinese philosophy … is coming through in the performances, and I really like that aspect of the program.”

Shen Yun offers exhilarating performances of classical Chinese dance and music. The performance illuminates traditional Chinese culture as it once was: a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues distilled from five millennia of Chinese civilization.

“I love the groundedness of the dance, which is different, and then the height and the jumps. … That’s all I think about—just the dance,” Ms. Hair said.

{etRelated  51159, 51041, left}Ms. Earle added: “I like how all the aspects of the program are working together through the dance—the music, the costumes, and then bringing in these pieces of Chinese culture like the philosophies. … They’re all working together to tell the story.”

“I like the fact that it’s told in little vignettes instead of one long story or one long program. It gives a lot of little tastes of different parts of Chinese culture, which is cool because Chinese culture is so huge and so rich, and there’s so much of it that we have no idea about,” she said.

Noting that the dances tell a variety of stories, she said, “I feel like I’m getting to know more of the Chinese culture through the different types of dances, the different ethnic dances.”

She said that seeing the Shen Yun dancers “makes me want to dance again.”
